good news for business – Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme. It has been announced that until March 2010 there is going to be a new initiative, the EFG Scheme, which will assist businesses with a turn over of up to £25 million with a loan of up to £1 million. 75% of the loan will be guaranteed by the Government and 25% will be unsecured and at the banks’ risk. This will of course be based on the applicants meeting certain criteria and for companies that are creditworthy.

There are some very interesting changes to this scheme compared to the Small Firms Loan Guarantee Scheme as the SFLG could not be used to cover debt. Many of our clients seek a way of consolidating various debt lines and this was impossible to do with the old scheme. At first sight the sector industries that are ineligible seem to be greatly scaled down, which is good news, we will of course have to wait to get final information.

What is Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme?
This is the Government’s new £1bn EFG Scheme will support up to £1.3bn of new lending by banks to eligible SME’s with working capital or investment needs.

Which companies will benefit from the scheme?

The Enterprise Finance Guarantee Scheme is going to be open to businesses with an annual turnover of up to £25m, seeking loans of £1,000 to £1m, which can be repaid over 10 years.

Most businesses in most sectors will be eligible for the scheme. However, state aid rules exclude businesses in the agriculture, coal and steel sectors.

What sorts of lending will this cover?

The guarantee can be used to support refinance existing loans, new loans or to convert part or all of an existing overdraft into a loan to release capacity to meet working capital needs.

How much of the loan is the Government going to guarantee?

The Government will guarantee 75 per cent of the loan.

How long will the scheme run for?

With all the work I’ve been doing down at the lakes, it’s necessary to keep a fire burning to dispose of all the small branches and unusable wood. Of course, as we all know it’s dangerous to leave a fire unattended so when I hauled my aching legs from the silt on Thursday afternoon I reasoned that it would be unsafe for me to leave the substantial fire burning and go home. The only possible solution that would adhere to the stringent safety regulations we apply, was for me to break out the brolly and fish Papillon Vert for the night … for safety reasons.

I fished the same swim as my last session on the lake, this time opting to use some of my recently home-made boilies on one rod, and their readymade flavour equivalent on the other. Both were cast out with a few freebies, and i applied my usual tactic of one slack-lined and one fished tight to snags.

Given my inexperience with bait making, i felt more confident that i would get takes on the Dynamite tiger nut readymades than on my own 50/50 basemix tiger nut flavoured concoction. However, after an unusually slow evening, it was the home-made boillie that produced first. After a great scrap, I slipped the net under a fabulous Common that may well have pushed the scales round to double figures – however numbers were irrelevant here and she was slipped back after a quick snap. I can’t tell you how good it felt to catch a fish on home-made bait. I owe a debt of gratutude to the good people at Carp-forums.com for their help and generosity.

The night produced two more Carp, both perfect Commons and with the biggest weighing in at around 14lbs. A very worthwhile session especially given the time of year.

The other thing that happened during the session sums up exactly why I love fishing these 3 lakes. As darkness fell, hearing the chirrup of the Kingfisher i looked up from my indicators and watched the master angler at work catching a small silver fish within a matter of minutes of settling on a branch no more than 10 metres from my rods. At the same moment, the sun briefly darkened as it’s equally evolution-optimised, but drastically different, counterpart the Heron flew impossibly slowly overhead. Smiling to myself at the completeness of this 3-angled scene, my heart skipped a beat as two small deer rounded the corner on the opposite bank, strolled to the water’s edge for a quick drink and then ambled back into the rich forest.

It would have been hard to imagine such a delightful scene…
Back on the blank

After a week of frozen water, things looked great on Friday evening as I left the lake after a day’s work. The water had unfrozen, temperatures were high and I was sure the fish would be anxious to get on the feed.

However, waking on Saturday morning I heard an unfamiliar and unwelcome howling from outside: the wind. From nowhere a vicious northerly had picked up and was sweeping through the valley below my new apartment. That wasn’t the most encouraging sign, given my plans to hit the lake early and tempt a few fish out.

I waited till lunchtime to see if the weather would change for the better, but alas no luck. However, stir-crazy, I set out in the car to give it a go anyway. This time I set myself up on Papillon Bleu. Set below ‘Vert’ (where I last fished), the two lakes share a dam wall although there is a 15ft drop between the two. It was at the base of this dam wall that I decided to fish today, hoping that the shelter and exposure to the sunshine might have drawn the fish into the overhanging trees that lined the bank.

Adopting my usual approach, one rod was fished with a pva bag of pellet and baited with pop-up corn, whilst the other was on a boilie and stringer. Safely tucked out of the wind I watched and waited for some sign of fish…and waited.

The lake felt cold and fishless as the wind swirled through the valley on it’s journey, bringing water temperatures plummeting down. Indeed, it took several hours before I saw my first fish – a fair lump throwing itself clear of the water a good 200 yards away. After a walk to see if a move would improve my fortunes I decided to stay put and see out the session tucked away in my little corner.

With only one line bite to show for my efforts I packed the gear into the back of the car and pondered the blank session. In the end, as I drove out past Papillon Vert and Papillon Rouge and took in the gorgeous scenery, I came to the considered conclusion that a blank in these surrounding is better than an afternoon in front of the PC

I’m getting settled into the French rhythm now, and trying my best to make taking lots and lots of pictures part of that rhythm. Check out the galleries for more new additions.

I’ll get some fishing done soon!

It was a relief to be back on the bank, albeit this was a different bank, in a different country and an entirely different proposition. Having arrived in France on Monday evening to take up my new role as manager of Exclusive Angling Holidays, I was finally, 5 days later, able to put the weeks of planning and preparation, and the hectic last few days of settling in and beginning a new job behind me. Arriving at first light on a misty, wet French morning the comforting sense of purpose surrounded me like an insulating blanket; keeping the chaos out and letting only fishy thoughts in.

The lake was Etangs Des Papillon Vert, one of a series of pools cascading through a valley that had been plundered for its natural deposits in the 1960’s during the construction of several major roads. At roughly an acre and a half, Vert is the smallest of the three lakes in the valley that are under the control of our business. The lake is heavily stocked with some beautiful Carp up into the 30lb bracket, and is usually a good bet for a bite or two whatever the time of year.

My plans for a final overnight session on St James’ lakes before moving to France have been well and truly torpedoed. I was planning to fish thursday night because the conditions looked perfect: strong south westerlies, dipping air pressure and warm temperatures.

However, waking on Thursday morning, I was greeted by a broken gas boiler that would require an engineer to fix. Of course, having waited all day the engineer turned up just as darkness was falling, and to top it off, was unable to fix the boiler.

Things went from bad to worse, as I began to feel decidedly flu-ey during the evening, scuppering any chances of a day session today. So as I lay here in bed under a duvet and my new Trakker bedchair cover…I’m pissed off and ever so slightly chilly!

As you might be able to tell from the number of pictures I post up here, I’m a bit of a camera geek. The galleries on this site are powered by Flickr, which is a great place to store and share your images – it’s also free

According to restaurant consultants interviewed by Restaurants USA magazine, re-designing your menu with a little menu engineering can improve your sales on average from 2 to 10 percent.

Use the methods below to achieve a more profitable menu.

1. Price Point Justification. Move your prices into your descriptions to avoid price-shopping by customers. Using the same typeface (or slightly smaller) and removing the dollar sign can further help the customer focus on the product, not the price.

2. Item Placement. People most often remember and buy the first two items or the last menu item in each menu category. Place your menu items with the highest gross profit in these spots on the menu.

3. Boxing. Impact 10 to 15 percent of the space on your menu by boxing menu items. As a general rule box one out of every 8 to 10 items. Boxes draw attention and usually get orders, so its best to use them on high-profit items. Too many boxes creates clutter and defeats their ‘attention getting’ purpose.

4. Page Positioning. On three-panel (page) menus, people most often look at the center panel first, and then move counter clockwise. On two-panel (page) menus people most often look at the top right-hand side first. Consider putting your high profit items such as specials or specialty drinks in these spots.

5. Hospitality Symbols and Icons. Stars, bullets, or other food symbol icons can make your menu unique and draw attention to menu items that you would prefer to sell. Graphics can set items apart and increase sales on those items as much as 15 percent. (Be careful with the ubiquitous Heart symbol that usually denotes ‘heart-healthy’ as people have learned to translate that into ‘tastes awful’.)

6. Hold the Hyperbole. Keep food descriptions short because only one third of your menu is actually read. Use wherever possible ‘word pictures’ rather than lengthy descriptions. And do not fear white space – it allows the eyes to pause and rest.

7. Showcasing. Highlight types of foods by including menu headings such as “Fresh Pasta” or “Our Specialties” rather than using generic terms such as Entrees.

8. Know your customers. If your customers are mostly over 50, keep the typeface (font) large enough to read in dim lighting and the design uncluttered. If you’re a family style restaurant, make your menus appealing to children by including colorful artwork, unusual fonts, and lots of boxed items. A white tablecloth setting calls for a more understated, simple yet tasteful design including a good quality paper stock.

9. Menu Inserts. Brand your restaurant by offering a specials menu insert that creates a sense of “You can only get this here”. Menu inserts also give your servers something to talk about and keep your menu fresh. Additionally, you can use them to promote high profit specials or new items that could eventually move onto the regular menu.

10. Keep your menus clean. Customers often associate a dirty menu with a dirty kitchen. They may not walk out this time, but they are less likely to return if your menu isn’t clean and sharp. So keep your menus clean by using protective menu covers that can be washed or replaced.

Construction Equipment Operators do a fundamental work that sometimes is not taken into account when thinking about constructing. However, a construction could not even begin if they did not exist. This demonstrates the high-importance of what they do.

These operators are those in charge of cleaning and grading land in order to be able to construct roads, neighborhoods and buildings. For this matter, they use special machinery to move some materials and earth to places like mines and construction sites. They control this equipment by operating switches, moving foot pedals or levers and turning dials.

There are different types of Construction equipment operators. They encompass operating engineers; paving, tramping and surfacing equipment operators; and pile-driver operators, among other sorts. Of course, all of them deal with the corresponding machinery equipment. What the first kind of operators mentioned above does is control the loading and excavation machines provided with shovels and scoops that allow them to excavate in the land. All operators categorized as operating engineers are able to control any kind of construction equipment.

On the other hand, paving and surfacing equipment operators focus on spreading and leveling asphalt or spreading and smoothing concrete from different structures such as roadways. Asphalt paving machine operators are in charge of driving a machine that regulates the temperature and the flow of the asphalt. Concrete paving machine operators control a machine that removes attachments that vibrate and spread and level wet concrete within forms. Tamping equipment operators work with tamping machines designed to compact earth. Pile-driver operators operate machines that are special for hammering piles into the ground. These piles are used to support bridges, retain walls or build foundations.

So you’re looking to learn about web hosting and what it has to offer or you may not know much about web hosting? There is no shame in not knowing this information. Everyone has to start at the beginning at some point. On that note, let’s begin learning about web hosting.

First off, what is web hosting and how does it work?

Web hosting is the business practice of providing space and bandwidth on a high-powered computer server that is connected to the Internet at very high speeds. Hosting companies maintain large networks of high-powered web server computers in a physical location known as a data center. These computer servers are connected to a very fast, and generally redundant, Internet connection. The data centers have primary and backup power, a fast connection to the Internet, and a security monitoring staff.

The web hosting companies provide a share of disk space and available bandwidth to a customer for a monthly fee. Once the customer is signed up, they can upload files to their personal space on the web server and the information is then viewable to anyone interested on the Internet. The monthly fee the web hosting company charges is much less than what it would cost to run a server out of your own home or data center. This is the reason these companies exist. They take care of all the hardware, software, and other technical needs for you.

Types of web hosting

There are many different types of web hosting offers, but the main three are shared, reseller, and dedicated. Each type of hosting is for a different purpose.

Shared Web Hosting

Shared web hosting is the most popular form of hosting. Shared hosting is a portion of disk space and bandwidth provided to you by the web hosting company on a high-powered server. There are many other web sites hosted on this server, and the hosting company is likely to have quite a few of these servers in a large data center. The resources of the server are shared by as many other websites as are allocated to that computer.

Shared web hosting is the best form of web hosting if you are looking for a great price and don’t have more than a couple thousand daily visitors to your site.

Reseller Web Hosting

Reseller web hosting is a popular, low-cost solution to starting your own web hosting business. There are two types of reseller hosting, private-label and a reseller of services.

The private-label is the best type of reseller plan because it allows you to retain full control over your customer’s websites. A private-label plan allows the reseller to keep the full monthly payment of the web-hosting customer, but the reseller must pay a monthly fee to the larger hosting company for the reseller space. The more hosting accounts a private-label reseller can sell, the higher the profit for them. Private-label hosting allows you to host many more websites than if you were using shared hosting for each. This is a great solution for someone who has many sites they need to host in one location to save money.

The reseller of services plans resell the regular web hosting plans of a larger web hosting company, but you get a discounted price for providing the customer and earn a monthly fee for as long as they remain a customer. This plan does not allow control over customer web sites and you only keep a portion of the potentially monthly revenue.

Dedicated Web Hosting

Dedicated web hosting is the most powerful and cost effective solution of hosting a busy web site without resorting to buying your own equipment and paying hundreds of dollars per month for a fast Internet connection. Dedicated hosting consists of single server with no one else hosting on that computer. This allows for the greatest of configuration options. Anyone who has a busy website will find dedicated hosting is the necessary choice.

Web Hosting Considerations

Wondering about all the other information listed in web hosting plans? In this section, I will explain the most important considerations in choosing a good web host.

Price

The price of web hosting services is one of the most important. There are many hosting companies out there with cheap hosting packages, but they may be lacking in other areas. Don’t let the price of a hosting package fool you. There are some hosting companies out there who have great prices and the other features are just as good. Price may be one of the most important decisions of a web hosting plan, but there is much more to consider in choosing a quality web host.

Disk Space / Storage Space

Disk space is the amount of physical storage space a web host gives to you to store your web files. Hosting companies these days have plans with disk space being measured mostly in terms of gigabytes, but some are still offering plans in the megabytes for storage space. Depending on your needs for file storage space, you may need more or less. Generally the more disk space offered the better.

Bandwidth / Data Transfer

The amount of bandwidth available can make a big difference in choosing a quality hosting plan. In general, the more bandwidth a hosting company makes available to you, the better. This means you can support more traffic to your web site as your business grows. Be wary of web hosting companies that offer unlimited or unmetered bandwidth. While many of these are legitimate offers, there are some out there who are overselling their bandwidth in hopes the average user won’t use much.

Customer Support

In any business, it is very important to provide exception customer service. Web hosting is no exception to this. Many of the hosting companies are available all day and night in case you have a problem with your web site, but there are some who are just available specific hours of the day. If your web site goes down in the middle of the night when they’re not available, this means lost revenue for a business. You should make sure the web host you select is always available for support.

Money Back Guarantee

Most web hosting companies will provide a thirty-day money back guarantee. Some will provide one even long, but be wary of the ones who offer no money back guarantee. I would not purchase web hosting services from a company who does not offer at least a 30 day money back guarantee, unless they have proven themselves to be a leader in the industry and have an excellent reputation.

Operating System

An operating system is a piece of software that controls the interaction between the computer user and the physical hardware of the machine. A vast majority of all web sites on the Internet run on the Linux operation system. Linux is generally much more stable than Windows. Stability is critical in running a web site. For this reason, I prefer to host my web sites on the Linux operating system. Some sites have specific requirements that only the Windows operating system can satisfy, but there are always alternatives to those requirements.

Backup

A good web hosting company will have a regular schedule to backup the data on all the web servers. The more often the data is backed up, the better. At the very least, a web hosting company should backup web site files daily.

Control Panel

The control panel is the point of contact the web site administrator will have between the host server and their own machine connected via the Internet. It is essential to have a well organized and easy to use control panel interface. My favorite control panel is cPanel, which is one of the leading web hosting control panels out there today. Plesk is another good one, and many companies will create their own control panel for you to use. Most web hosting companies will provide a link to a demo of the control panel they use with their hosting plans. The control panel used is a matter of preference, but it should be user friendly.

Email

Email is essential part of communication on the Internet. Most web hosting companies out there will give you more email addresses and more space to hold email messages than you will ever need. What you need to watch out for are the companies that have decided to be a little strict on their email accounts and only offer a small number or a small amount of message space.

Uptime

Uptime is a term used to describe how often the average web site hosted by a company is available online. No company should be expected to provide an exact 100% uptime. This is impossible due to things such as hardware, software, and power failures. A vast majority of the companies are very good with uptime, and they guarantee it. It is still a good idea to be conscious of the uptimes posted by the company. If it is not at least 99.5%, it is probably not worth hosting with that company.

Statistics

As a webmaster, it is nice to know how many visitors you’ve had, where they came from, how long they stay on your site, and how much bandwidth they’ve used. This information is collected by the web server and is placed in a log file. A statistics software package can read this data and provide meaningful information to the webmaster. The information gathered from these logs can be very valuable in improved services to the viewers of the web site.

FTP

FTP stands for file transfer protocol. It is a way of quickly uploading or downloading many files to and from a web server. Most web hosting companies will allow their customers access to their web hosting accounts via FTP. FTP is very useful and is a great feature to have when paying for a web hosting account.

Scripting

Since the World Wide Web began, many scripting languages have been created and have evolved into the dynamic and interactive environment we enjoy today. A scripting language is a way of adding functionality to a web site, whether it is to calculate numbers or to load information from an external database. Scripting languages have made electronic commerce possible. Some of these languages include PHP, ASP, JSP, Cold fusion, VBscript, JavaScript, and Perl. I won’t go into the details of these in this article for the sake of complexity. If you know how to use these languages, you should know what to look for in a web server for them.

Databases

A database is a place to store data that can be used in a large variety of ways. Databases are used on the Internet for applications such as shopping carts, message boards, and product catalogues. The more databases the web hosting provider allows you to create, the most applications you can deploy on your web server. Databases are used by the more advanced web master, but information is freely available online should you be interested.

Conclusions
